Scope note
Notes about the usage and scope of the concept.- [Adoption reflection — History] The right to roam (Norway's Allemannsretten, Sweden's allemansrätten) is a long customary law of Northern Europe — the right of anyone to walk and stay in nature regardless of who owns the land. It differs from the commons that shares ownership (iriai, Allmende): if the commons is "owning and managing together," the right to roam is "access beyond ownership" (which is why we do not link them by exactMatch). [Culture] It stands on the Northern European cultural premise that nature belongs to all. That is why it is hard to transplant as-is where private property rights are strong. [Capacity of actors] Before it is institution, this right leans on a mature civic culture of respecting one another's customs. With the right comes the responsibility to "leave no trace."
