Scope note
Notes about the usage and scope of the concept.- [Adoption reflection — History] The cooperative has no single root — Britain's Rochdale consumer cooperative (1844), Germany's Raiffeisen credit cooperative (1864), Spain's Mondragón worker cooperative (1956), Italy's social cooperatives of Emilia-Romagna (1991) each arose from a different need. When one says "adopt the cooperative," one must first be clear which lineage is meant. [Culture] Where a tradition of mutual aid such as dure and pumasi runs thick, cooperation is an extension of culture; where it is transplanted as institution onto individualism, it must take root anew. A culture of trust and association is the soil of the cooperative. [Capacity of actors] How much experience of association and capital of trust has accumulated decides success or failure. Italy's cooperative ecosystem is the accumulation of over a century. Importing only the institution and skipping this accumulation leaves an empty shell.
