Scope note

Notes about the usage and scope of the concept.
  • [Adoption reflection — History] The digital commons grew from movements to build and share knowledge and code without privatizing them — the free software movement (Stallman, 1980s), Creative Commons (2001), Wikipedia. It carries the commons of land (iriai, Allmende) into the digital world. [Culture] Attitude differs by whether knowledge and information are seen as commodities to buy and sell, or as a commons cultivated together. [Capacity of actors] What matters is whether the digital commons, like the offline commons, has norms and organization to manage it. "Free release" alone does not sustain — the commons survives only with self-governing devices that organize contribution and prevent free-riding and privatization (Ostrom's principle of the commons applies here too).
